Thinks critically and analyses nursing practice

As per the ANSAT Behavioural Cues, in 18 months course on Nursing Standard, I have learned about the local policies and legislative principles related to nursing practices. For example, in nursing practice r course work, the policy that I have learned first is punctuality and how to maintain confidentiality. The entire course work is based on the policy and StandardStandard set by "The Australian Health Practitioner Agency" or Ahpra (Ansat.com.au. (2022). According to the policy or regulation, a nurse should always maintain the confidentiality of patient/client information included in this 18-month course. Additionally, other factors or practices that have been included in this course work are as follows:

  1. Punctuality on arrival time and leaving time
  2. Cleanliness
  3. Always seek assistance from senior staff members to resolve any conflict
  4. Follows and abide by the ethical principles and reasoning in every health care activity

Additionally, in this coursework, I have learned about the importance of understanding and respecting cultural diversity in the workplace. The rule and regulations of anti-discrimination in the workplace have been learned in this coursework so that any individual can practice sensitively in cultural contexts when dealing with patients or professionals.

Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships

During these 18-month of nursing practice, I have learned about the policies and standards related to the process of engaging own self as a nurse in therapeutic and professional relationships. Firstly, I have learned through this 18-month course work that, as a nurse, I should greet the patient by his name, always maintain eye contact and display professionalism. According to the Australian Health and nursing care standard, during this course work, I have learned that a nurse should always explain everything they will be doing and review the care plan in accordance with the needs of the patients (Stenhouse, 2021).

The therapeutical and professional relationship between nurse and patient refers to that relationship which is based on respect, mutual understanding, trust, nurture of faith and hope. Therefore, during coursework, we have been asked to focus on choosing words and developing communication skills. As per the nursing standard and policies, effective verbal and non-verbal communication is vital in nurse-patient interaction. With effective communication, a nurse can provide care in such a manner that enables a patient to be confident and hopeful about wellness. Another thing that I have learned from the course work is how to maintain the privacy of my patient while I am providing care. Here, I have to make sure that the needs of the patients are being fulfilled, including the source of discomfort or any pain. Active listening habit has also been developed during this coursework as a beneficial way to engage own self in a therapeutic and professional relationship with the patient.

Maintains the capability for practice

From the 18-month course, I learned the importance and approach to maintaining the capability for nursing practice. The role of nursing involves a lot of responsibility, sensitivity and a commitment to lifelong learning. The course enables me to develop the urge to identify my own learning needs, which allows me to learn from different situations that arise in the nursing journey and become a successful nurse. In the process of lifelong learning, seeking feedback and support from others and also supporting others in the learning journey is crucial. From the course, I further understand the importance of reflecting on my own practices and on the path of continuous professional development.

In the process of maintaining the capability for practice, one of the crucial aspects is to identify and take appropriate action in the time capability for own practice is found impaired. So in that scenario, taking appropriate self-care and support strategies is required to maintain the desired level of capability for practice (Ansat.com.au, 2022). Finally, to maintain capability, the importance of accountability for own decisions and actions holds the utmost importance, which I learned in the 18-month course.

Comprehensively conducts assessment

In the 18-month course, I have learnt the practices related to comprehensive conduct assessment. It is one of the core responsibilities of a nurse to carry out a comprehensive and systematic assessment as further treatment is being carried out based on that information. In the 18-month course, I learned the approach to questioning patients and his/her family members to obtain the required information. In the process, it is crucial to be polite and respond appropriately to the cues of the patients so that the patient/client feels comfortable sharing all the necessary information for the treatment (Davis et al, 2021). Further, I also learn the importance of time in the whole process. As a nurse, I need to carry out the assessment within an acceptable time. Further, during the assessment, it is also crucial to effectively demonstrate the appropriate and sensitive physical technique to the patients in an easily understandable manner.

After obtaining the information from the patients, a nurse is further responsible for analysing and interpreting the assessment information. In the process, I learned to prioritise the important assessment findings and gain knowledge to select the appropriate healthcare strategy based on the assessment findings. The consideration of the limitations imposed by the clients is crucial to the healthcare strategy of the patient.

Develops a plan for nursing practice

From the 18-month course, I obtained detailed knowledge regarding the practice of developing a plan for care. The care plan needed to be developed collaboratively with the patient and his/her family members considering all the crucial information obtained from the assessment. In the process, completing the entire documentation of the related StandardStandard is crucial, including patient records, care planner and assessment and so on (Stenhouse, 2021). Further, the consideration of the organisation of planned care with regard to the other integrated procedure, including wound care, allied health therapies, pain medication and other ongoing interventions, is required.

From the course, I learned the importance of collaboration to deliver a successful care plan. The plan is required to develop in collaboration with the respective healthcare team, the patient and his/her family. Collaborating with the healthcare team, the patient and his/her family enable to prioritise and develop short-term and long terms goals for the patient's recovery. Moreover, the set goals needed to be developed in a SMART (Specific, measurable, achievable. relevant and timely) format (Alexander, 2022). Besides that, in the end, advising the patient regarding the working and effect of the entire care plan is also crucial.

Provides safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice

In the session where I have taught about how to provide safe, appropriate, and responsive quality practices as a nurse.

Firstly, I have been taught about the assurance of thorough discharge procedures. Here I have learned that A patient's compliance with treatment is far more within the control of nurses during a hospital stay, and they are also better able to respond to inquiries concerning the patient's care. This practice can help the nurse to provide correct assumptions about the way of treatment for the patient and their family member (CNNe, 2021). Here, according to StandardStandard, a nurse should be responsible for encouraging patient participation in handover. It is a high-risk communication process. Active patient participation in handover is a vital strategy to improve the quality of treatment and safety ofthe patients (Ansat.com.au. (2022). Therefore, I have taught about how to develop an active strategy to make the patient involved in the process. Additionally, being a nurse, it should be essential to comply with the workplace policy and nursing standards in the healthcare setup. Here, the nurse should also monitor the patient or client's safety during the assessment process and provide care treatment. During the course, I have also learned about how to use resources effectively and efficiently and respond promptly to the changing needs or requirements of the patients.

Evaluates outcomes to inform nursing practice

One important session in the 18-month nursing course work was “how to evaluate the outcome to inform the nursing practice”. Here I have learned the importance of monitoring progress towards the expected goal and health outcomes. Being a nurse, I have to follow the policies and nursing standards or processes set up by the Ahpra or The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Alexander,2022). According to the policy and practice, always a nurse should maintain discharge planning in collaboration with the health care team for a particular patient. In this session, I have taught about how to record-keeping about the current or time-to-time health status of the patient. This can help the professional to monitor the health outcome (Witt, 2022).

Here I have learned about the process of modifying plans to evaluate the goals and outcomes in consultation with relevant health care teams and professionals. Here I have learned how to question the patient to confirm the level of understanding.
