Research Papers

The authors Campbell et al, (2018), have observed the STEM practice in the early years. The study has been done by the authors to assess the learning of children regarding science, technology, and engineering. The authors have observed four pre-school centers and researched those about maths, science, and technology pedagogy. The authors have also analyzed learning opportunities presented for students in the outer environment. This study of authors aimed to attempt an interrogation of STEM practices in the early years. The practices which the authors have interrogated include the ones which are informed by education pedagogies. These practices have been analyzed by the authors for understanding STEM education approaches. The authors have preferred to adopt a mixed research approach to conduct this study with their observation. Interviews of educators and a pilot survey have also been done in the research to collect data. The authors have combined all the data to understand STEM education practices used in preschool. Under this study, the authors have reviewed various pre-school centers which have provided rich and varied learning experiences to children. Throughout the study, the authors have observed that the STEM experience of children helps to enhance the self-belief in children that they have the capability to learn STEM. The findings of this study highlighted various practices and pedagogies which are useful to support STEM learning. In the study, the authors have mainly observed four and five-year-old children of four pre-school centers. The authors have taken multiple sessions with the children in order to observe them. The findings have included data from comments of educators on children STEM learning, the data from the survey, from interviews of educators, and observations of the researcher. The findings of studies demonstrated that the environment of pre-school is rich in terms of learning opportunities for children. The authors have also identified that science is integrated with technologies and mathematics. It has also been identified by the authors that there are many ways available in which the students can learn pedagogy supporting STEM in pre-schools.

In the views of McClure et al, (2017), the students learn about science and technology from an early age. For example, if children plant something in a community garden, they learn the basic science concepts of the natural world. Like, the roots of a plant, the way a plant grows, change in seasons, etc. The base of learning about science gets developed in childhood which later develops the ability to critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision making. In the research, it has been identified that for the critical development of children, high-quality STEM learning is required. STEM learning can help immensely in the growth of the child across diverse areas. The authors have mainly identified five findings of the research. The first finding of the research stated that the students and their parents tend to be very enthusiastic about making the child learn STEM in their early years. It has also been identified that the parents require expansion of knowledge for supporting the STEM learning more. The second finding demonstrated that teachers who provide STEM learning to children need to get more professional training and development for enhancing the engagement with children. The third finding of research has shown that technology and the parents of children are helpful in supporting and connecting the children to a better STEM learning environment. The fourth findings of researchers demonstrated that public policies regarding the learning of children play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of STEM learning in the lives of young age children. The final finding which the authors have identified from the research has shown that strategic communication is highly needed for a correct understanding of science among young children, and also for supporting meaningful public policies regarding STEM learning. In the study, to enhance the support towards STEM learning, the authors have also included some recommendations. These are comprised of suggestions like engaging the parents more, supporting the teachers, connecting learning, the transformation of early childhood education for children. The authors in this study have studied and explained STEM learning and its importance for young children in-depth. The authors have also focused upon a two-science approach for enhancing the support towards STEM learning in the outer environment.
